Meryl Streep sparks uproar over ‘We’re all Africans’ remarks

Meryl Streep, the most admired actress of her generation, fueled Hollywood’s diversity controversy on Thursday when she said that all of humanity originated in Africa.

The three-time Oscar winner, who is in Berlin heading up her first international film jury, made the comment at a news conference when she was asked if she was familiar with world cinema, particularly films from Africa and the Middle East.

She said she had recently seen the Jordanian film “Theeb,” about a Bedouin boy on a hazardous mission in the desert, and also “Timbuktu,” about Islamist militants taking over the fabled Malian city.

“The thing that I notice is that there is a core of humanity that travels right through every culture,” she said. “And after all, we’re all from Africa originally, you know. We’re all Berliners; we’re all Africans, really.”

Another day, another awkwardly tone-deaf comment from a Hollywood celebrity about race. Today’s foot-in-mouth moment is brought to you by walking, talking award magnet Meryl Streep, who’s set to head the international jury at the Berlin International Film Festival, running through February 21.

The festival describes itself as “a source of inspiration in the global film community” and boasts that it attracts “more than 20,000 professional visitors from 128 countries.”

This is the jury chosen to judge the films from all those countries:

The Berlin International Film Festival became embroiled in the debate about diversity in the movie industry Thursday, with jury president Meryl Streep dismissing questions about the all-white panel by telling reporters that “we’re all Africans really.”

Streep, who heads a festival film jury for the first time, said she was committed to equality and inclusion “of all genders, races, ethnicities, religions.” The seven-member jury also includes German actor Lars Eidinger, British film critic Nick James, French photographer Brigitte Lacombe, British actor Clive Owen, Italian actress Alba Rohrwacher and Polish director Malgorzata Szumowska.

“This jury is evidence that at least women are included and in fact dominate this jury, and that’s an unusual situation in bodies of people who make decisions,” Streep said. “So I think the Berlinale is ahead of the game.”

Cecil stirs world, but Africans see two sides to hunting debate

When Zambia banned lion hunting in 2013, animal welfare groups roared in approval, but rural Zambians who face a threat from big cats and receive a slice of hunting-related revenues complained, causing the government to change its mind.

Leopard hunting will resume this season with “cautionary quotas”, while lion hunting will be allowed to restart the year after that, according to the tourism minister, Jean Kapata.

“We decided to lift the hunting ban after receiving numerous complaints from the communities where the hunting blocks are located,” Kapata said, adding that 50 percent of the money from hunting goes back to communities.
