Paul: Nobody read the $1.1 trillion omnibus bill

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) on Sunday said he voted against the $1.1 trillion government spending bill that passed Congress last week because nobody had a chance to read the behemoth legislation.
“It was over a trillion dollars, it was all lumped together, 2,242 pages, nobody read it, so frankly my biggest complaint is that I have no idea what kind of things they stuck in the bill,” Paul told host John Catsimatidis on “The Cats Roundtable” on New York’s AM-970.

It was over a trillion dollars, it was all lumped together, 2,242 pages, nobody read it, so frankly my biggest complaint is that I have no idea what kind of things they stuck in the bill,” Paul told host John Catsimatidis on “The Cats Roundtable” on New York’s AM-970.

“I voted against it because I won’t vote for these enormous bills that no one has a chance to read,” he added.

“We were given it yesterday or the day before the bill came forward, and so this is not a way to run government. It’s a part of the reason why government is broke.”

This 2,242-page bill will fully fund Obama administration priorities such as Obamacare and President Obama’s 2012 executive amnesty program, providing tax credits and other federal benefits to hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants. It will continue to fund sanctuary cities while also granting $1.6 billion for the President’s refugee program — bringing an additional 85,000 refugees from high-risk areas into this country, all while failing to improve the vetting process and true reform of the visa program. Half a billion dollars will still be funneled through to Planned Parenthood, and appropriations include green energy subsidies for wind, solar, and alternative fuels. It even expands the surveillance state through incentives for companies to turn over customer information to the NSA and FBI.

RAND PAUL: STOP PAUL RYAN’S OMNIBUS SPENDING BILL

Unfortunately, the disastrous omnibus spending bill that Speaker Paul Ryan negotiated pushes the American dream further away from too many families. Following an all-too-familiar script–despite Republicans holding the majority in both houses of Congress–GOP leadership betrayed our principles through this terrible bill, acquiescing to the Obama administration’s determination to swell to our $18 trillion dollar debt.

This irresponsible bill is another reminder of the Right and Left’s unholy alliance of spending more of our money at every turn. Conservatives in the House and Senate must fight this big government bill if we are to build a better future where our children can thrive, not just pay off our profligate spending.

Sessions: Omnibus bill decided by four members in secret

Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions condemned GOP congressional leadership in a radio interview Thursday. He charged that Republican leaders relied not on members of the House and Senate but on non-lawmakers for final input and approval of the omnibus spending bill.

“No member of even the House and Senate knew what was going on. Special interests did because we heard from lobbyists what some things were being considered. It’s not right for ultimately four members, in secret — for reasons we have no understanding of — to make critical decisions on things,” Sessions told Portland, Oregon-based radio host Lars Larson Thursday night.

The senator blamed recently appointed House Speaker Paul Ryan for H-2B and other provisions, but added that the Wisconsinite came in to his new position too late to break the momentum behind the annual spending bill.

No,” she told reporters in the Capitol. “We’re talking it through.”

A number of conservative Republicans are expected to oppose the omnibus bill over spending levels they deem too high and the absence of anti-terror provisions, meaning GOP leaders will likely need a significant number of Democratic votes to move the package on to the Senate.

Threatening that effort, a number of Democrats say they plan to oppose the spending package, arguing that it leans too heavily in favor of Republican priorities.

“I think it’s a disgrace,” Rep. Luis Gutiérrez (D-Ill.), a leading member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC), said Thursday morning. “I think Democrats have to stand up tomorrow and say ‘no.’”

Pelosi said she herself will support the measure, but acknowledged “serious unease” among Democrats that leaves the final vote in doubt. The numbers, she added, remain unclear.
