Edward Snowden sues Norway to avoid extradition to US

Edward Snowden will take the Norwegian state to court in a bid to secure free passage there, a Norwegian law firm representing the former US spy contractor said on Thursday.

Mr Snowden has been invited to Norway to receive a freedom of speech award from the local branch of writers’ group PEN International, but is worried that he would be handed over to the United States, his lawyers say.

“The purpose is to get legally established that Norway has no right to extradite Snowden to the U.S.,” the law firm, Schjoedt, said in a statement.

“U.S. authorities have already asked that Snowden will be extradited to the U.S. if he was to arrive in Norway,” Hallvard Helle, the lawyer representing Snowden, told Reuters.\

Documents confirm rendition flight used Copenhagen Airport for mission to capture Edward Snowden

The online media source Denfri.dk reports that, after gaining access to documents from the Justice Ministry, it has confirmed that in June 2013 Copenhagen Airport was used to hold an American rendition plane that was sent to capture Edward Snowden from Moscow Airport and return him to the USA.

Snowden, who shot into the international limelight after making extensive revelations about the USA’s intelligence activities at home and abroad, was confined to the airport in Russia before he was offered asylum in the country.

New docs confirm CIA had rendition flight lurking in Europe to catch Snowden

In August 2015, the Danish news website Denfri.dk filed a number of Freedom of Information requests to the government in Copenhagen, seeking the disclosure of documents concerning the alleged involvement of Denmark in a plot to arrest and extradite Snowden. On Sunday, it reported that after lengthy deliberation, it had acquired new evidence that substantiated the claim.

Among the documents published by Denfri.dk are permission for the overflight and landing of the plane, which warns that it should be operated exclusively for “state purposes of [a] non-commercial nature,” and talking points for the Transport Ministry should journalists ask about the plane.

A bipartisan coalition has proposed a series of laws across the country aimed at securing people’s privacy in the digital age. Privacy advocates showed support with the hashtag #TakeCTRL, urging people to gain control of their personal data.

 

The personal privacy push in 16 states and the nation’s capital is designed to pressure federal lawmakers, whom the campaign has “been largely asleep at the switch,” to upgrade Americans’ digital protections against government spying.

“If Congress is unwilling or unable to act to protect Americans’ privacy, or takes actions that are insufficient, the states are more than willing to step up and fill the void,” an American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) statement said.’

The CIA’s former acting director, Michael Morell, blamed the Paris attack on Internet companies “building encryption without keys,” which, he said, was caused by the debate over surveillance prompted by Snowden’s disclosures.
