Rambling Reporter at the Oscars: Champagne Chugging, Hollywood Critiques Chris Rock

Nominees had mixed feelings about the “thank-you scroll” that producersReginald Hudlin and David Hill installed as a new show feature. On the red carpet, most actors and directors said they had turned in their list of up to 80 words. “I think it’s a great idea,” said Alejandro G. Inarritu, who was able to use his time onstage when he won for best director to talk about diversity. “I think one of the things that happens to you is you suddenly forget everything — your own name, your mom’s name — so to have the chance to thank some people is great.”

The Martian screenwriter Drew Goddard also filled out the form: “You start with your family, then you move to your crew and then everyone else. That’s at least how I structured it.” At least one nominee didn’t participate: “I didn’t do it because I know I’m not going to win,” Rooney Mara told THR ahead of the show (Alicia Vikander won). “And I’m old-school. I want to thank the people verbally, not with a little CNN scroll.” Someone who never got a chance to express his gratitude was SylvesterStallone. He told THR he was flabbergasted at losing: “I had a speech Winston Churchill would have loved.” — Rebecca Ford with reporting by Bill Higgins.

Chris Rock at Oscars: You’re Damn Right Hollywood Is Racist – It’s Sorority Racist (Video)

chris-rock-575x299

Rock told the audience, “You’re damn right Hollywood is racist.”

It’s also 95% liberal.
In fact, it is harder for a conservative to get a job in Hollywood than any black person.
But that does not appear to be an issue.

Who is Stacey Dash and why did she just walk across the #Oscar stage?

IMG_4228-577x1024

You might be watching the Oscars and wondering why someone named Stacey Dash just walked across the stage. (Why was that funny anyway?)

Well, I’m Stacey – with an “e” – and it’s nice to meet you. I was born in the South Bronx, became an actress in Hollywood where I starred in the 1995 movie Clueless.

Since then, you won’t believe what happened. (Actually you can read the full story in my upcoming book There Goes My Social Life: From Clueless to Conservative.) Even though I voted for Obama during 2008 – even had a bumper sticker! – I didn’t make the same mistake twice. In 2012, I voted for Mitt Romney – and everyone freaked the hell out about it.

Why? Well, black people should support black candidates, I was told. But I’m not one to be told what to do. No matter my skin color, I was going to vote for the best candidate. Since I was blamed, mocked, and ridiculed in the press over supporting a Republican, I’ve spoken out about a LOT of stuff that black people try to stuff down my throat.

For example, I spoke out against Black History Month. ( Why should there be such a thing? Haven’t we had more than just one month’s worth of accomplishments? Here my thoughts HERE.) Plus, I spoke out against the #OscarsSoWhite controversyHERE. My take? We need to stop complaining about white people oppressing us, we shouldn’t boycott the Oscars, and we need to support Chris Rock the host.

Which brings me to the joke. When they added ME to increase the diversity, I’m sure many black people rolled their eyes. I’m not “black enough,” they say. But guess what? I’ve heard that all my life. I would rather be a free thinking, black than a cookie cutter black who thinks – and votes – just like all my friends.

Oscars 2016: EW review

From Chris Rock’s opening monologue to the fiery Public Enemy anthem “Fight The Power” that ran over the credits, the 88th annual Academy Awards mounted a sustained and wildly messy assault on Hollywood’s diversity problem, an epic insistence that black lives do matter. ABC’s broadcast could have avoided the controversy of #OscarsSoWhite, which would have been wrong, or dealt with it in one segment or a few segments, which may not have been sufficient. Instead, the show boldly engaged in the debate – even wallowed in it – and let the conversation that framed the entire awards season underline its final night. I’m not sure how much the Oscars affirmed the power of movies on Sunday, but the ceremony did assert the power of our chatter. The subtext of the entire evening seemed to be: If we don’t hit this race thing hard, Twitter’s gonna kill us. And so there was overkill.

Oscars Ratings: Return Of Chris Rock Sees Show Hit 8-Year Low

Chris Rock

Chris Rock came out swinging in one of the best opening monologues in years and took on the diversity controversy from the get-go at the 88th Academy Awards. Last night also saw Brie Lawson win Best Actress, Leonardo DiCaprio snag Best Actor in his fifth nomination, Alejandro G. Iñárritu was named Best Director and Spotlightwon Best Picture. With all that, the Oscars themselves had a not such a great night with a 23.1/37 in metered market results.

Declining to an 8-year low, that’s down 6% from the 24.6/39 that the ceremony got last year in early results from the 56 markets across the country. That 2015 Neil Patrick Harris hosted Oscars were matched with the 2011 Oscars for the third worst the Academy Awards has done in MM ratings since the last time Rock fronted the gig in 2005 – only 2009’s 23.3 and 2008’s 21.9 were lower.

The 2005 Oscars were the best the show has done in the past decade with a 30.1/43 MM rating. That high has also remained true in later numbers for the show. WithMillion Dollar Baby winning Best Picture, the 2005 Oscars ended up with a massive 42.14 million viewers and 19.6 million among adults 18-49. In both categories, that was a dip from 2004’s results. Compared to the last time Rock hosted 11-years ago, last night’s 8:30 – midnight show was down 23% in metered market results.

Last year’s Oscars ended up with 37.3 million total viewers and an 11.0/26 rating in the key demo. That was the lowest performance among adults 18-49 since 2008 and the lowest viewership since 2009. We will update with more numbers from last night’s Oscars as they come in.

#OscarsSoWhite debate sparks diversity changes at Film Academy

56a2c6f6c46188b1338b457c

Confronting fierce protests over its all-white Oscar nominations for a second year straight, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences approved sweeping changes to make its membership, governing bodies and voting members more diverse.

The plan would double the number of women and diverse members by 2020.

“The academy is going to lead and not wait for the industry to catch up,” the academy’s president, Cheryl Boone Isaacs, said in a statement. “These new measures regarding governance and voting will have an immediate impact and begin the process of significantly changing our membership composition.”

The changes announced on Friday were approved in a special meeting of the group’s 51-member governing board. They follow a weeklong storm of protest and calls for an Oscar boycott after the academy nominated an all-white slate of actors for the second year in a row.
