CLEAN ENERGY BREAKTHROUGH COULD TURN ESTUARIES INTO POWER STATIONS

estuary1

Research published this week in the journal Nature outlines how significant amounts of power can be generated from a natural phenomenon that occurs when fresh water comes into contact with seawater through a membrane.

The process of osmosis that occurs can be harnessed to capture the electrical charge of the salt ions that travel through the membrane to balance the concentrations in each liquid.

“We had to first fabricate and then investigate the optimal size of the nanopore,” said Jiandong Feng, a researcher at EPFL’s Laboratory of Nanoscale Biology and lead author of the research.

DONALD TRUMP MOCKS HILLARY’S ROBOTIC VOICE

For those who watched his slapstick comedy takedowns of ‘low energy’ Jeb Bush, ‘little’ Marco Rubio, and ‘mess’ Rand Paul earlier in the campaign, it should come as no surprise that Trump is attacking on this level first.

VENEZUELA ENERGY CRISIS: PRESIDENT TELLS WOMEN TO STOP USING HAIRDRYERS AND GO WITH ‘NATURAL’ STYLE TO SAVE ELECTRICITY

Nicolas Maduro has announced a decree giving state employees Fridays off for two months as part of measures to offset a crippling electricity shortage.

He urged his compatriots to increase other efforts to save power, including cutting appliance use and raising the temperature on air conditioning units.

Senators Quietly Stick Green Energy Subsidies Into FAA Bill

Senators from both sides of the aisle are trying to get an amendment into a bill reauthorizing the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) that would extend $1.4 billion in expiring green energy subsidies that weren’t included in last year’s budget deal.

We’re disappointed that consistent support exists among Senators to extend corporate welfare to the so-called ‘green energy’ industry. It’s unfortunate to see lawmakers sneak these provisions through the backdoor using unrelated must-pass measures — especially only months after extending major wind and solar subsidies in an end-of-year deal,” Christine Harbin, director of federal affairs at Americans for Prosperity, said in a statement.

SENATORS QUIETLY STICK GREEN ENERGY SUBSIDIES INTO FAA BILL

South Dakota Republican Sen. John Thune worked with Democratic Sens. Bill Nelson of Florida and Ron Wyden of Oregon to get lucrative tax subsidies for things like wind power, fuel cells and geothermal heat pumps much to the chagrin of conservative groups.

“We’re disappointed that consistent support exists among Senators to extend corporate welfare to the so-called ‘green energy’ industry.

Conservatives are furious with Thune and others who want another bill extending green energy tax credits after passing a massive $680 billion tax package in December that included a slew of green energy subsidies — including a $23.8 billion investment tax credit for building solar panels.

Ben Carson Endorses Donald Trump, Praises His ‘Guts & Energy’

Ben Carson, the former pediatric neurosurgeon who dropped out of the Republican presidential race last week, endorsed Donald Trump on Friday, praising his “guts” and “energy.”

“There are two different Donald Trumps,” Carson said at the billionaire’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida. “There’s the one you see on the stage and there’s the one who is very cerebral, sits there and considers things very carefully. You can have a very good conversation with him. That’s the Donald Trump that you’re going to start seeing more and more of.”

Trump agreed with that assessment.

“I probably do agree. There’s the public version … it seems to have worked over my lifetime,” he said. “I think it’s different than the personal one.”

Moments later, though, Trump seemed to reject that idea.

“I don’t think there are two Donald Trumps. I think there’s one Donald Trump,” he said.

Why oil prices vary at pumps across the globe

petrol-pump_660_103113080154 - copy - copy_030516042353

A dramatic drop in oil prices is translating into a mixed bag for motorists across the globe – from hefty savings at the pump in the United States to a rare fuel price hike in Venezuela.

Oil prices have dropped nearly 70 per cent in the past 20 months, driven down by a glut in supply. All countries have access to the same oil prices on international markets, but retail gasoline prices vary wildly, largely because of the taxes and subsidies imposed on them.

That has meant the impact of diving oil prices has been uneven around the world.

In the United States, for example, drivers have enjoyed the fall as average gasoline prices tumbled to $1.64 a gallon ($0.43 a liter) last month from $3.37 a gallon ($0.89 a liter) two years ago. That has spurred a road renaissance of sorts as Americans hit the highways in greater numbers.

“It’s great. It used to pain me to fill up my car, but now it’s no big deal,” said Patsy Gehring, a 59-year old who lives in Philadelphia. She says she notices the low pump prices every time she fills up her 2014 Honda Civic and is considering driving instead of flying on an upcoming trip to Florida.

“I’m probably going to end up driving. I’d prefer to fly, but gas prices are so cheap it just makes sense,” she said.

The decline in prices at the pump has been more muted in countries like Indonesia, China and India, which have tried to reduce subsidies and absorb some of the gains from lower oil prices as taxes or levies, Barclays said in a research report.

Overall, retail fuel prices in Asia – which is home to three of the world’s four largest energy importers – have fallen only about 35 percent despite the almost 70 percent decline in oil prices since July 2014, Barclays said.

In China, the wholesale gasoline price ceiling – which is set by the country’s central planning commission – has fallen 29 percent since February 2014. But in January regulators set a floor on price cuts, saying they would no longer adjust prices down when oil prices are below $40 a barrel. One benchmark oil price, Brent crude, was trading at around $36 a barrel this week.

Chesapeake Energy Corporation (CHK): Is the Worst Over for the Stock

chk-relative-68256

Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE:CHK) took a major beating last year, with the stock falling a humongous 77%. While the management of the second-largest natural gas producer in the US had hoped for positives in 2016, things have turned out to be disappointing so far. The stock has declined 56.67% since the start of the year.

Macroeconomic developments along with internal company problems have weighed down Chesapeake’s performance. The table below shows the stock performance compared with the United States Natural Gas Fund, LP (NYSEARCA:UNG). The company has significantly underperformed its peers in the same period.
