Global warming is making weather BETTER: 80 per cent of Americans are benefiting from nicer conditions than 40 years ago

This is one of the reasons it has been difficult to motivate US citizens to tackle global warming, the authors of the new study have said.

‘Weather patterns in recent decades have been a poor source of motivation for Americans to demand policies to combat the climate change problem,’ said Professor Megan Mullin from Duke University, co-author of the study.

‘But without serious efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, year-round climates ultimately will become much less pleasant.’

Professor Mullin and Professor Patrick Egan from New York University studied 40 years of daily weather data, from 1974 to 2013, on a county-by-county basis to evaluate how the population’s experience with weather changed during this period, which is when climate change first emerged as a public issue.

Weather blamed in Nepal plane crash

Nepal-locator-JPG

The Twin Otter plane was supposed to be in the air for only 19 minutes after it took off around 7:50 a.m. Wednesday (9:05 p.m. ET Tuesday), Rai said.

But eight minutes in, contact was lost.

Soon after, Myagdi district residents saw flames shooting up from a forest and called security officials, Nepali Tourism and Aviation Minister Ananda Pokharel said. It didn’t take long for arriving authorities to spot the plane’s wreckage.

On its website, Tara Air describes itself as “the newest and biggest airline service provider in the Nepalese mountains,” with seven aircraft in its fleet.

The airline said its mission is to help develop rural Nepal. The region where the plane crashed is a notoriously windy, cold and, like much of Nepal, mountainous.

In 2012, an Agni Air plane flying the same route from Pokhara to Jomsom crashed, killing 15 people. Six people survived.

A technical problem prevented that plane from landing normally, said Bindesh Lal Karna of the Rescue Coordination Committee at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu.

Spring is still two months away, but buyers are already flocking to Village’s scenic ‘valley’ in Arvada Candelas

Everybody knows new home buyers don’t get serious about shopping until well after the Super Bowl – except this year, that is. In master-planned Candelas in Arvada, Village Homes opened models in one of Candelas’ most attractive sites – a protected valley that has water features, a park and rolling open space, over the hill from where a national wildlife refuge opens in 2017. Now, buyers are clamoring over homes and sites in Village’s Valley View; and six have bought there just since Jan. 1.

‘We like this; we expect to look across something like this,” one couple told me, visiting from the Vail area, who were looking at Valley View with Realtor Dominic Massa after viewing Arvada resale homes

3750

Scotland, Northern Ireland and parts of Wales and northern England have been warned to expect bad weather overnight on Monday and into Tuesday as Storm Henry bears down on Britain.

High winds are forecast across Scotland, which has been issued an amber warning, the second most severe. Gusts of 70mph-80mph are now expected, while 90mph is possible in the most exposed areas, especially across the Western Isles and along the west coast.

Storm Henry comes soon after Gertrude, which brought gusts of more than 100mph in places, as well as heavy rain and snow.

We’d like your help in documenting any incidents that have happened due to the storm. If you know of any road closures, police barriers or flooded roads let us know by filling in the form below. Tell us what has happened and where so we can map your responses.

The leading edge of a monster snowstorm arrived on Friday afternoon in Washington, D.C., threatening to dump as many as 30 inches (76 cm) of powder on parts of the Middle Atlantic region and bring record accumulations to the U.S. capital.

After days of planning by emergency officials and a scramble by residents to stock up on supplies, the blizzard got underway in the nation’s capital at about 1 p.m. The storm, expected to end late on Saturday afternoon, could leave 2 to 2.5 feet (61 to 76 cm) on the ground and bring winds of 30 to 50 mph (48 to 80 kph), according to the National Weather Service.

The western suburbs of the capital were expecting up to 3 feet of snow. In Virginia, the National Guard planned to bring in up to 300 troops to deal with emergencies.
