BELIEVING IN TWO GENDERS IS A ‘HATE CRIME’ UNDER POLICE INVESTIGATION AT CATHOLIC COLLEGE

genderneutral-bathroom

It’s uncommon at Jesuit universities these days for someone to openly share a traditional Catholic viewpoint.

When it happened at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, the school was so spooked it called the Los Angeles Police Department.

Both the police and the university’s Bias Incident Response Team are investigating the stated belief that only two genders exist, male and female, as a hate crime.

A Loyola alumni office employee discussed her views on sexual orientation, which align with the Roman Catholic Church, with students who were hanging up posters on the subject on April 14.

Cosette Carleo, one of the students involved, told The College Fix in a phone interview that the hate crime under investigation is “denying transgenderism.”

Los Angeles Philharmonic announces 2016 season at the Hollywood Bowl

o2gkbf-bowlbc.sidetable

The Los Angeles Philharmonic released programming and personnel details this week for the 2016 classical music season at the Hollywood Bowl without much fanfare. Make that none whatsoever, unless you consider a press release that appeared without warning in my in-box fanfare. Certainly, the summer slate looks a lot like summers past. Still, the Bowl remains one of the bigger classical summer festivals in the world and there are plenty of concerts to look forward to on this year’s schedule if you poke around a little. The L.A. Phil’s seemingly ho-hum attitude to it seems strange.

Here are a few events worth mentiong.

Music director Gustavo Dudamel will have a large presence, conducting more concerts than any one else, including the traditional opening of the classical season. On that program (July 12), he’ll be joined by Lang Lang for Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 and after intermission lead the orchestra in Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Scheherezade.”

He’ll then direct concert performances of Bernstein’s “West Side Story” on July 14 and 19 (the cast is tba); conduct a Gershwin/Ravel program, with guest soloist Yuja Wang, on July 21, and the annual foray into opera, “Tosca,” on July 24. The cast includes Julianna Di Giacomo in the title role, Fabio Sartori as Cavaradossi and Falk Struckmann as Scarpia.

Dudamel is then back on Aug. 2 to lead a program of South American music that includes the world premiere of Lalo Schifrin’s “Concierto de la Amistad,” with guitarist Angel Romero as soloist, and on Aug. 5-6 to preside at the annual Tchaikovsky Spectacular.

With Los Angeles-area leak halted, gas company prepares for the legal battles

19741964-mmmain

The Los Angeles County district attorney slapped it with criminal charges. Los Angeles city and county officials filed accusations of ill-prepared crews and public injury. The state attorney general added claims of irreparable environmental damage. And the local air pollution agency alleged negligence in constructing the Aliso Canyon gas facility in the first place.

As Southern California Gas Co. appears to have sealed the noxious leak that has displaced thousands of Porter Ranch-area residents, its legal battles with various government agencies continue to stack up.

Experts said the litigation could have a large-reaching impact on the way the larger gas industry does business in the future.

“These lawsuits are going to serve as a wake-up call, not just for SoCal Gas, but other gas utilities around the state that the government oversight is there and willing to take legal action,” said Richard M. Frank of the California Environmental Law & Policy Center at the University of California, Davis. “It reflects both the volume of the natural gas releases and the collective impatience with this public agency.”

Toluca Lake? Hollywood Power Players From Miley Cyrus to Kirsten Dunst Call This L.A. Enclave Home

10106_toluca_lake_85_-_h_2016

Although it’s been popular with entertainment industry types since the silent film era, Toluca Lake until recently has not generated the type of buzz that other celebrity havens have, instead being one of those places people refer to as “a hidden gem.” But word is getting out: As writer-producer Adam Leff puts it: “The Bird Streets are over — all the movie- and rock-star types are moving to Toluca Lake.”

Developed during the 1920s, the 1.22-square-mile tract in the San Fernando Valley was envisioned as a Spanish-style village in homage to the nearby historic Campo de Cahuenga (where the treaty ending U.S.-Mexico hostilities in California was signed). Early buyers had to agree to construct Spanish Revival-style homes as a condition of purchase. According to local lore, this restriction fell by the wayside when Bette Davis instead built an English country-style home. (Regrettably, radio personality Rick Dees replaced it with a hulking neo-Georgian in the 1990s.)

Panel To Consider 2 Temporary NFL Teams In LA Coliseum

lacoliseum

The Coliseum Commission will meet Thursday afternoon to consider amending USC’s current lease, which allows only one NFL team.

The Rams, who are relocating to LA, will play at the Coliseum until the team’s new stadium is built in suburban Inglewood, and the NFL has given the San Diego Chargers an option to join them. If the Chargers decline, the option would transfer to the Oakland Raiders.

The Coliseum Commission is a joint-powers authority with representatives of the state of California, Los Angeles County and the city of Los Angeles.

WHY ENGINEERS CAN’T STOP LOS ANGELES’ ENORMOUS METHANE LEAK

12-28-15-gasleak

An enormous amount of harmful methane gas is currently erupting from an energy facility in Aliso Canyon, California, at a startling rate of 110,000 pounds per hour. The gas, which carries with it the stench of rotting eggs due to the addition of a chemical called mercaptan, has led to the evacuation 1,700 homes so far. Many residents have already filed lawsuits against the company that owns the facility, the Southern California Gas Company.

Footage taken on December 17 shows a geyser of methane gas spewing from the Earth, visible by a specialized infrared camera operated by an Earthworks ITC-certified thermographer. The Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) released the footage last week, calling it “one of the biggest leaks we’ve ever seen reported” and “absolutely uncontained”:

On Christmas Eve, Syracuse is warmer than Los Angeles

Syracuse, N.Y. — It will be warmer today in Syracuse than in Los Angeles. Or Las Vegas. Or San Diego.

An El Niño-fueled heat wave across the Northeast is already shattering high temperature records. Syracuse broke the record for the warmest Christmas Eve by 4 a.m., when the thermometer hit 63.

The forecast high for today is 67. That’s almost double the normal high of 34.

By contrast, Los Angeles will likely not get any warmer today than 62. San Diego will be just 63, and in Las Vegas, they’ll be shivering at 56.

Here’s a list of selected U.S. cities that are usually much, much warmer this time of year than Syracuse. If you have friends and family in these places, feel free to gloat. You know they’ll do it to us when that first lake effect storm hits.

Threats Against ‘Many Schools’ Prompt LAUSD To Shut Down All Campuses

An “electronic threat” against several Los Angeles Unified School District schools has prompted the closure of all of the district’s campuses Tuesday.

Superintendent Ramon Cortines said the threat was “conveyed not to one school, but many schools in the district.”
