TELEGRAPH: GOOGLE WANTS TO MONITOR YOUR MENTAL HEALTH. YOU SHOULD WELCOME IT INTO YOUR MIND

brain More precisely, he’s going to work for Google Life Sciences, one of the more exotic provinces of the online empire. He’s going to investigate how technology can help diagnose and treat mental health conditions. Google doesn’t just want to read your mind, it wants to fix it too.

It’s not alone. Apple, IBM and Intel are among technology companies exploring the same field. IBM this year carried out research with Columbia University that suggested computer analysis of speech patterns can more accurately predict the onset of psychosis than conventional tests involving blood samples or brain scans. Other researchers theorise that a person’s internet search history or even shopping habits (so handily recorded by your innocuous loyalty card) can identify the first signs of mental illness. Computers can now tell when something is about to go terribly wrong in someone’s mind.

City officials change mind, close radioactive park

635760412345675179-Still0824-00013 Mary Oscko has been at the park nearly every day for the past 29 years, however. She lives in a home that borders the park, about 100 yards from the contaminated soil.

Mary was recently diagnosed with stage four lung cancer. She is terminal and will be lucky to live two more years.

She believes the contamination caused her cancer because she would walk in the park every day for years.

For Mary, no one should be anywhere near the contamination until it’s gone.

“Let’s err on the side of being conservative,” said Oscko. “Let’s take no risk when our children are involved.”

She and a handful of other concerned citizens sought signatures from people living near the park over the weekend.

The signatures are part of a petition to close the park completely, until the remediation is complete.

The petition was turned in just after 1:30 p.m. a few hours after crews had already begun putting up fencing along the parks boundaries.

CITY OFFICIALS CHANGE MIND, CLOSE RADIOACTIVE PARK

radioactive-park-ksdk The park backs up to Cold Water Creek which has dumped radioactive material into the park’s floodplain, contaminating the soil.

The Army Corps of Engineers is overseeing the remediation of the park, and says the contamination is limited to the area’s they have designated.

Still, concerned citizens wanted the park completely closed until the mess was cleaned up.
