Illinois seeks to shut down state Obamacare insurer; 49,000 to lose insurance

Illinois moved Tuesday to take control of Land of Lincoln Health to begin an orderly shutdown of the insurance company, meaning about 49,000 people will lose their health coverage in the coming months.

The state said it will allow policyholders to buy coverage from a different insurer before their Land of Lincoln plans are terminated, but it’s unclear when the policies will lapse.

“It’s a bad day for the marketplace in Illinois and our consumers,” said Jason Montrie, president and interim CEO of Chicago-based Land of Lincoln. “This is the end.”

Parents sue feds for forcing school to let transgenders in girls locker room

Do the rights of boys who identify as girls trump the rights of girls who are born girls?

That question is at the heart of a lawsuit filed by dozens of Illinois parents after the Obama administration’s Department of Education strong-armed their school district into allowing a transgender student the right to use all girls’ locker rooms.

“The girls are mortified,” said Alliance Defending Freedom attorney Jeremy Tedesco, a religious liberty law firm representing some 50 families. “They are in a constant state of fear that their bodies are going to be exposed to a male in these settings. It’s a constant state of stress and anxiety for them.”

At least one of the plaintiffs, a female student at the high school, was harassed and bullied because she is uncomfortable changing in the same locker room with a biological boy.

“While she was in the changing stall, other girls who were in the locker room began calling her names, including ‘transphobic’ and ‘homophobic’,” the lawsuit states.

FIRST HUMAN CASE OF WEST NILE REPORTED IN ST. CLAIR COUNTY

 Because of recent increased West Nile Virus activity in mosquitoes in southwestern Illinois, health officials recommend that citizens be conscientious in using insect repellent to stave off mosquitoes and wearing protective clothing during dawn and dusk, when the insects are most active.

Environmental and human surveillance for West Nile virus in Illinois includes laboratory tests on mosquito batches, dead crows, blue jays, robins and other perching birds, as well as testing sick horses and humans with West Nile virus-like symptoms. People who observe a sick or dying crow, blue jay or other perching bird should contact the local Health Department, which will determine if the bird will be picked up for testing.

A bill signed into law this month requires parents of children entering kindergarten and grades six and nine to provide a Certificates of Religious Exemption with a health care provider’s signature if they opt out of vaccine requirements.

Supporters hope it will reduce the number of religious exemptions, which have more than doubled since 2009, reaching more than 13,000 for the 2013-2014 school year.
