New website shows most people in city jails come from two Bronx neighborhoods

Residents of two Bronx neighborhoods — Crotona Park East and Morrisania — are more likely to be spending the night behind bars than people who live in any other part of the city.

The South Bronx neighborhoods have the highest rate of incarcerated residents, according to an analysis of jailed New Yorkers’ last known addresses by DATA2GO.NYC, a new free mapping and data site.

On average, 371 of every 100,000 of the neighborhoods’ adult residents were locked up in a city jail on any given day during 2014, a higher rate than in any other area, the data show.

Governor Andrew Cuomo today dispatched approximately 150 trained officials and support staff in the Bronx to facilitate widespread testing for Legionella bacteria in water tower cooling systems.

The officials are led by the State Department of Health, and testing is being done in close coordination with the work of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and New York City’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

Bronx Legionnaires’ disease outbreak finally spurs action from NYC officials as 86 cases are confirmed

It took the largest and deadliest outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease in New York City history to spur officials to target the cooling towers spreading the lethal bacteria.

In the South Bronx, where seven people died and 79 more were sickened in the past three weeks, residents had just one question Tuesday: What took so long?

As the number of confirmed neighborhood cases swelled again, Mayor de Blasio announced new legislation — after decades of neglect — to identify and inspect all buildings fitted with the large units.

How many cooling towers? It’s probably in the tens of thousands. City officials just don’t know.
