North Korean satellite ‘stable’ in orbit after launch, US official confirms

The satellite that North Korea launched into orbit Sunday is now “stable” in orbit, a U.S. official told Fox News on Tuesday.

Earlier reports had claimed the satellite was “tumbling” in orbit, which would have rendered it useless. A U.S. official told ABC News the same technology used to get the payload into orbit is the same needed to launch a nuclear-armed intercontinental ballistic missile at the U.S.

A satellite launched by the secretive regime in 2012 is still in orbit but spiraling back to Earth and is not believed to have transmitted signals back to Earth.

Both satellites bear the name “Shining Star,” a reference to Kim Jong Un’s father, the late Kim Jong Il. The new satellite, which is thought to be somewhat larger than the earlier one, is called Kwangmyongsong 4.

North Korea to launch satellite this month, U.N. agency says

North Korea has indicated that it will launch a satellite sometime between February 8-25, a United Nations agency said Tuesday — a launch that has drawn American concerns because of the rocket to be used.

North Korea told the International Telecommunication Union on Tuesday that it intends to launch an Earth observation satellite, ITU spokesman Sanjay Acharya said. The ITU registers all satellite transmission frequencies to ensure there is no cross-satellite interference.

The launch could raise international tensions. U.S. officials have said the same type of rocket that would put the satellite into orbit could be used on a different occasion as an intercontinental ballistic missile.

A similar scenario unfolded in 2012, when North Korea announced it was launching a rocket carrying a satellite. North Korea said that operation was for peaceful purposes, but Japan, the United States and South Korea decried it as a cover for a long-range ballistic missile test.

SpaceX plan vs reality: Satellite launched, ocean platform landing botched

The private spaceflight company SpaceX has launched a reusable rocket that is supposed to deliver a NASA ocean-monitoring satellite into low-Earth orbit. However, the audacious plan to land the rocket on a platform at sea in the Pacific Ocean did not go as smoothly as planned.

SpaceX failed to land the Falcon 9 rocket on the platform, despite the first stages of the launch being successful, the company officials said. The touch-down must have been “hard,” since the rocket’s landing leg broke.

Heat flash over Sinai prior to Russian plane crash reportedly detected by US satellite

As the investigation into the deadliest air incident in Russia’s history, which has claimed 224 lives, mostly Russian, is under way, officials say it’s too early to pronounce the cause of the crash – and that no version has been ruled out.

Preliminary data indicates that the Airbus 321 en route from Sharm-el-Sheikh to St Petersburg sustained heavy damage as it was traveling at an altitude of over 10,000 meters and the crew had no control over its descent. Rescue workers have found 12 large pieces of the plane’s hull at the crash site, indicating how badly it was damaged in the incident, Russian officials reported.

This Satellite Image Leaves No Doubt That Russia Is Throwing Troops and Aircraft Into Syria

Over the past year, evidence has steadily emerged of a growing Russian military presence in Syria. As Bashar al-Assad’s armies have failed him in the field, he has increasingly relied on outside help. Initially, that help came from Hezbollah and Iran, but now it appears to be Moscow’s turn. And Washington may finally be waking up to what looks like a substantial Russian intervention in Syria.

SATELLITE IMAGE LEAVES NO DOUBT THAT RUSSIA IS THROWING TROOPS AND AIRCRAFT INTO SYRIA

New satellite images, obtained by Foreign Policy, of construction at an air base near Latakia leave little doubt that U.S. policy toward ending the conflict in Syria, such as it is, is now in total disarray. As they say, seeing is believing.

Admittedly, there has long been a Russian military presence in Syria. When opposition forces overran a Syrian listening post in October last year, the images revealed that it was staffed by the Russian military. More recently, analysts have noted pictures and videos that seem to confirm the presence of Russian combat forces fighting in Syria. Russian military vehicles have been sighted, while Russian soldiers have posted images and comments on Russian social media sites like VKontakte and the California-based LiveJournal, detailing their service in the war-torn country.
