The hackers have been in some systems for over a year before being detected and have deployed a wide range Of different types of malware, using infrastructure originating from China, according to an FBI document.

“The FBI has obtained information regarding multiple malicious cyber actor groups that have compromised sensitive business information from US commercial and government networks through cyber espionage,” reads a May 2 FBI alert from the agency’s cyber division. In what is potentially a sign of how serious the attacks are, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released a related Joint Analysis Report, and the Defense Security Service (DSS), which is part of the Department of Defense (DoD), distributed its own Cyber Alert.

FEDS SPENT $86 MILLION ON PLANE THAT CAN’T FLY

The Office of Inspector General for the Justice Department released a report Wednesday chronicling the boondoggle, which initially started as an $8 million project eight years ago.

“In fiscal year 2008 the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) expended nearly $8.6 million to purchase an ATR 42-500 aircraft (ATR 500) to support its counternarcotics efforts in Afghanistan,” the inspector general said. “The Department of Defense (DOD) agreed to modify the DEA’s ATR 500 with surveillance equipment and other capabilities to conduct such operations in the combat environment of Afghanistan in what became known as the Global Discovery program.”

Architect of Pentagon’s Personnel Reform Plan Resigns

Carson is expected to leave the post on April 8. He is reportedly resigning along with his senior adviser Morgan Plummer.

Carson cited “low likelihood of confirmation” and “reduced time left in the administration” as reasons for his decision to resign.

The Force of the Future personnel reform includes such widely-debated decisions as opening combat positions to women.

DoD to Expand ‘Force of the Future’ Personnel Plan Despite Setback

Pentagon officials said Tuesday that the sweeping changes proposed under the “Force of the Future” military personnel reforms would go forward and even be expanded despite the surprise resignation of the plan’s “architect.”

“Nothing’s changed with regard to Force of the Future,” Pentagon Press Secretary Peter Cook said of the plan that has been trumpeted as a legacy initiative for Defense Secretary Ashton Carter.

“The secretary remains squarely behind the initiatives he’s already unveiled and has more to come,” Cook said. Carter will be making the case for Force of the Future in upcoming congressional testimony, Cook said.

“And he feels confident that these are changes that are critical to this department going forward” and adapting to retain personnel and recruit more into the ranks in a changing economy, Cook said. “It’s our goal to continue working with Congress.”

MILITARY CONTRACTORS FINED FOR USING RUSSIAN PROGRAMMERS FOR DOD PROJECTS

 NetCracker Technology Corp. has agreed to pay $11.4 million, and Computer Sciences Corp. has agreed to pay $1.35 million to resolve a case, brought by the government under the False Claims Act, that they used individuals without security clearance on a DoD project.

In 2008, Computer Sciences Corporation was awarded a contract from the Department of Defense to create communications software for the DoD’s Defense Information Security Agency (DISA.) The company then subcontracted part of the work to Netcracker Technology, who used Russian services in order to lower costs.

This was brought to light in 2013, when former NetCracker employee John Kingsley said that the company had hired Russian programmers living in and around Moscow, who lacked the contractually required security clearance to work on DISA. Because of this, both NetCracker and Computer Sciences Corporation had breached the DoD contract

Of course, if true, the whole “assisting Kurdish forces” won’t go over well with Turkey’s Erdogan, the US’s brand new coalition partner against ISIS who has made no secret of his distrust for the YPG.

Then again, there had to be some pretext for an imminent escalation with Russia and since it’s all a convoluted, bloody mess at this point, “helping Kurdish forces” is just as good as any other excuse we suppose.
