At least 16 dead after shooting at Ivory Coast beach resorts; al-Qaeda claims responsibility after 6 gunmen killed

At least 14 civilians and two soldiers were slaughtered Sunday after six gunmen ravaged popular beach resorts in Ivory Coast  — a savage attack reportedly claimed by al-Qaeda.

The gunfire erupted near the Hotel Etoile du Sud in Grand-Bassam, and the terror spread to two nearby resorts — the Wharf Hotel and Hotel La Tavern.

Witnesses said the shooters, heavily armed and donning balaclavas, shouted “Allahu Akbar!” as they opened fire on sunbathers — and shot anyone who didn’t say it back.

“They were getting people to shout those words and they killed anyone who didn’t,” local trader Koba Maiga told The Guardian.

“Three walked side-by-side along the beach and there was a fourth man who finished off any survivors.”

Illegal immigrant accused of murdering five people cuts himself with safety razor in jail suicide attempt

The illegal immigrant accused of murdering five people in Kansas and Missouri tried to commit suicide in jail Thursday morning, officials said.

Pablo Antonio Serrano-Viterino, 40, cut himself with a safety razor a day after policecaptured him hiding facedown in a ditch with a rifle near him, according to the Montgomery County, Mo., Sheriff’s Office.

Jail guards had placed him on suicide watch Wednesday, but Serrano-Viterino moved into the county jail’s general population Thursday.

New bill would let gun violence victims sue firearm manufacturers

If you’re a carmaker and your airbags kill someone, you’re potentially liable,” Rep. Adam Schiff (D-California) told The Hill in an interview. “If you’re a pharmaceutical company and sell faulty drugs, you can be held liable. If you’re a liquor store and sell alcohol to minors, you can be held liable.”

“Why should it be any different for gun manufacturers?” Schiff, one of the lawmakers behind the bill, asked.

Opponents of the Equal Access to Justice for Victims of Gun Violence Act argue that car manufacturers are only held liable when vehicles malfunction, not people are killed by drivers. They and say that the new law will leave gun manufacturers open to frivolous lawsuits, an outcome that the original law was designed to stop.
