WA Senate Ousts Transportation Secretary

The rare move was taken by the Senate as majority Republicans and a Democrat who caucuses with them voted 25-21 against confirming Lynn Peterson’s 2013 appointment. The list included the halting of the Seattle downtown tunnel project due to a sinkhole, the collapse of the Skagit River Bridge, and various problems with state ferries.

Department of Transportation spokesman Lars Erickson said Peterson would not be commenting Friday about the decision.

The vote comes after the WSDOT implemented toll lanes on I-405, which met with a groundswell of citizen resistance.

“We’ve had some projects in the past that have been funded by transportation packages but this one really does a lot of good for Yakima Valley, both for tourism and for private contractors that are in the area, this will create a lot of jobs for them”, said Brian White, with Wa.

AGRICULTURAL SECRETARY VILSACK TO HOLD ‘SECRET MEETING’ WITH BIOTECH

gmorat

Natural Society has pointed out Vilsack’s very obvious conflict of interest in his position before as it pertains to Big Biotech and other health/food related sectors, but this planned meeting makes it even more obvious that he has no intention of protecting the small farmer, or US agriculture in general.

Vilsack’s plan for a secret meeting is timed with Campbell’s Soup Company’s announcement that it is going to adopt GMO labeling for all of its products. While representatives from Big Food and Big Biotech, including Monsanto executives, will be invited to the meeting in Washington D.C., it seems odd that not one official representative will be invited from the four states that have recently passed obligatory GMO labeling laws: Alaska, Connecticut, Maine, and Vermont.

DEFENSE SECRETARY SUGGESTS PUTIN MIGHT NUKE AMERICA, SAYS US WILL “DEFEND INTERNATIONAL ORDER”

putin-nuclear12 AshHeadphones_0  Of course to be fair to Carter, Washington hasn’t exactly put him in a good position. After all, what the US is doing in Syria is deplorable and with the passing of MANPADS and anti-tank missiles to Sunni extremists near Aleppo, the whole “strategy” now borders on the bizarre, especially in light of what happened over the Sinai Peninsula last weekend and also taking into account Washington’s relationship with Siite militias battling ISIS in Iraq.

Meanwhile, the situation in the South China Sea is just downright silly, as Washington and Beijing risk starting World War III over 3,000 acres of sand that Beijing piled on top of reefs in the Spratlys.

HUD Secretary Castro, Gov. Bryant talk Katrina recovery in Gulfport

Aid from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development was integral to the Coast’s housing and economic recovery after Hurricane Katrina, Gov. Phil Bryant told HUD Secretary Julian Castro during Castro’s first trip to Mississippi on Thursday.

HUD also changed after Katrina, Castro said, becoming better at teaming with states for disaster relief.

Castro, who was in Gulfport to commemorate Katrina’s 10th anniversary, toured the Coast on Thursday, accompanied by Bryant, several members of Mississippi’s congressional delegation and Gulfport Mayor Billy Hewes.

Defense secretary: We’re looking at U.S. sites for Gitmo detainees

635756741904962339-AFP-543422340 There is nothing so far on alternatives to Leavenworth or Charleston, said a senior defense official speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly. The Pentagon is waiting on a report from the federal Bureau of Prisons on alternatives, the official said.

Carter said there are two types of detainees at Guantanamo: Those who are eligible to be transferred to other nations, and those who must continue to be held.

As long as detainees are held in Guantanamo, Carter said, they remain a focal point for jihadi propaganda and agitation.

There has been no pressure from the White House to transfer detainees at a faster rate, Carter said. “I see it exactly as the president does,” he said.

DEFENSE SECRETARY: WE’RE LOOKING AT U.S. SITES FOR GITMO DETAINEES

humvee-fence-gitmo The top two sites are the military prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., and the naval brig at Charleston, S.C., Carter said.

“That does not mean those sites will be chosen,” Carter said.

Iraq’s Abadi dismisses cabinet secretary in reform push: official

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi dismissed his cabinet secretary and his aides on Wednesday as part of a push to cut “unnecessary government jobs”, an official in his media office said.

Abadi launched this week the biggest overhaul of the country’s political system since the end of U.S. military occupation, enacting a package of measures to eliminate a layer of senior government posts, scrap sectarian and party quotas for state positions, and reopen corruption investigations.
