CZECH PRESIDENT CALLS FOR ARMING CITIZENS TO DEFEND AGAINST TERRORISM

Having previously been against private gun ownership, Zeman now says“citizens should arm themselves” to deal with the threat of terrorism.

“Earlier I spoke often about limiting the ability to have large quantities of weapons. But after the terrorist attacks, I have changed the idea,” Zeman told Blesk.cz.

Zeman also called for a fence to be built along the country’s border “if there were a large inflow of illegal migrants,” while also urging failed asylum seekers to be deported more quickly.

“Condemning terror attacks is easy, the only solution is doing away with the causes,” said Zeman.

Venezuela energy crisis: President tells women to stop using hairdryers and go with ‘natural’ style to save electricity

The President of Venezuela has urged women to stop using hairdryers and offered alternative styling tips as the country’s energy crisis continues.

Nicolas Maduro has announced a decree giving state employees Fridays off for two months as part of measures to offset a crippling electricity shortage.

He urged his compatriots to increase other efforts to save power, including cutting appliance use and raising the temperature on air conditioning units.

Recommending that women reduce hairdryer use to “special occasions”, Mr Maduro added: “I always think a woman looks better when she just runs her fingers through her hair and lets it dry naturally. It’s just an idea I have.”

He also called on Venezuelans to make small changes to their routines, including embracing the tropical heat and hanging clothes out to dry instead of using tumble dryers.

Not everyone welcomed the advice, with one Caracas resident telling Al Jazeera: “If the President thinks that not blowdrying our hair is going to help, then the problem is far worse than we thought.”

The government has declared Fridays a non-working day for the public sector for the next 60 days as the economic and energy crisis combine to cause food shortages and long supermarket queues.

Makers of frozen snack apologize for Y10 price increase

sorry

The maker’s of Japan’s famous ice candy Garigari-kun have released an ad apologizing for a 10 yen price increase.

The new commercial, titled “Garigari-kun Neage” (Garigari-kun Price Increase), features Akaginyugyo President and CEO Hideki Inoue along with the company’s executive brass and the staff of the Fukaya City factory headquarters.

As the one-take segment nears the end, some titles appear on the screen. The text reads “We’ve worked hard for 25 years but,” followed by a discreet “60→70,” in reference to the price of a single soda flavored Garigari-kun bar going from 60 yen to 70 yen.

Now, you might be thinking this is a kind of tongue-in-cheek joke, but rest assured that it is not.

There’s no way the company’s president would put himself out on the line like that for what would be a lukewarm gag at best. The cute music you can hear was likely added because without it the tone of the commercial would have been much darker than a 10-yen more expensive candy would have warranted.

Salman Rushdie: It’s Mistake for Obama Not to Call It ‘Islamic Terrorism’

salman-rushdie

Author Salman Rushdie–against whom Iran’s Ayatollah Khomeini issued a death fatwa in 1989 because of his book “The Satanic Verses”–says that it is a miskake for President Barack Obama not to use the term “Islamic terrorism.”

“It’s a mistake that the president is making to not use the term Islamic terrorism,” Rushdie said Wednesday during a question-and-answer session hosted by New York University’s Washington, D.C. Academic Center.

SALMAN RUSHDIE: IT’S MISTAKE FOR OBAMA NOT TO CALL IT ‘ISLAMIC TERRORISM’

2-18-16-obama (1)

It’s a mistake that the president is making to not use the term Islamic terrorism,” Rushdie said Wednesday during a question-and-answer session hosted by New York University’s Washington, D.C. Academic Center.

Rushdie was responding to a question from an audience member on whether he had changed his views since he had written a 2001 New York Times opinion piece entitled Yes, This Is About Islam.

The answer is, no, they haven’t changed,” Rushdie said. “And I think, actually think it’s a mistake that the president is making to not use the term Islamic terrorism.”

“Because, of course, it’s not what a majority of Muslims would think or want,” Rushdie explained. “Of course, it’s a freakish manifestation that has grown up inside Islam. But to say that it’s not about Islam denies what the killers themselves always say.”

REPORT: OBAMA ADMIN’S EFFORT TO ‘ELIMINATE RED TAPE’ ADDS $16 BILLION IN COSTS

SadObama

President Obama signed executive orders (13,563 and 13,610) as part of an effort to ‘eliminate red tape.’ Federal agencies were told to ‘modify, streamline expand, or repeal’ existing regulations,” according to the report released by AAF, a center-right nonprofit led by Douglas Holtz-Eakin, former director of the Congressional Budget Office.

The American Action Forum has found the reviews consist mostly of recycled regulations by federal agencies that have actually increased regulatory costs.

“The recent ‘retrospective reports’ from the administration reveal that executive agencies have added more than $16 billion in regulatory costs, up from $14.7 billion in the previous update, and 6.5 million paperwork hours,” the report said.

House passes ObamaCare repeal, sending measure to president

ryanpaul_010616gn

Obama is certain to veto the measure, but Republicans touted the vote as important step toward reversing the Affordable Care Act and the expansion of government it created.

“We are confronting the president with the hard, honest truth: ObamaCare doesn’t work,” Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) said Wednesday.

Republicans were able to get the repeal bill through the Senate, where Democrats had filibustered previous efforts, by using a fast-track process known as reconciliation that allows the bill to pass with a simple majority.

Democrats denounced the measure on the House floor, repeatedly invoking the roughly 16 million people enrolled in ObamaCare programs.
