Assad Ready For Snap Elections As Kremlin Denies Report Of Russia-US Plan To Help Him Flee Syria

Last week, Bashar al-Assad celebrated one of the most significant (at least from a symbolic perspective)military victories in the history of his government’s campaign against opposition groups battling for control of Syria.

With the help of Russia and Hezbollah, Assad’s army liberated the ancient city of Palmyra from Islamic State. Palmyra is a UNESCO world heritage site and over the course of the last nine or so months, ISIS has obliterated a number of priceless artifacts on the grounds that they are monuments to paganism.

Needless to say, it’s better that Assad control the city than ISIS. Even the US State Dept. was forced to (begrudgingly) admit as much.

But Washington’s reluctance to celebrate the liberation of Palmyra reflects growing concerns that Assad, Hezbollah, and other Iran-backed Shiite militias are now poised to march on Deir ez-Zor – and then on Raqqa.

With the “moderate” opposition in the west subdued, a victory in the east would mean Assad has conquered the entire country. Clearly, that raises the question of what happens next. That is, it’s rather difficult to depose someone who has just vanquished the last vestiges of the opposition. Still, you shouldn’t expect Washington, Riyadh, Doha, and Ankara to give up on the effort to oust the Alawite government just yet, which is why we weren’t surprised when London-based al-Hayat reported that the US and Russia had agreed on a plan that would see Assad take refuge in an as-yet unnamed country once a political transformation has had time to take hold.

Russia supports both Assad troops and rebels in battle against ISIS – Putin

Russia supports Syrian President Bashar Assad’s forces and will back anti-Assad rebels as long as they are fighting Islamic State, President Vladimir Putin told Germany’s Bild, countering claims that Moscow only backs the regime rather than hitting jihadists.

“We support both Assad’s army and the armed opposition,” Putin said in a lengthy recent interview to the newspaper, now published in full. “Some of them have publicly declared this, others prefer to remain silent, but the work is ongoing.”

According to the president, “This is hundreds, thousands of armed people fighting Islamic State [IS, previously ISIS/ISIL].”

“We are coordinating our joint operations with them and support their offensives by airstrikes in various sections of the front line,” Putin said.

The Western media has repeatedly criticized Russia over its airstrikes in Syria, claiming they only support the Assad regime and allegedly focus on hitting the Syrian opposition rather than IS.

PUTIN HINTS THAT RUSSIA COULD GRANT ASYLUM TO ASSAD

The Russian president said it was premature to discuss asylum, but added that it would be easier to welcome the Syrian leader than the US whistleblower Edward Snowden, who was given asylum in Russia in 2013.

“It was surely more difficult to grant Snowden asylum in Russia than it would be in the case of Assad,” the Russian president said in an interview published on Tuesday.

ASSAD: EUROPE, TURKEY, QATAR, AND SAUDI ARABIA MADE SYRIA A “HOTBED OF TERROR”

Despite the fact that fomenting sectarian discord and creating the type of instability that leads to regime change is part and parcel of US foreign policy, the general public is blissfully ignorant when it comes to the role played by Washington and its Mid-East allies in fostering the kind of chaotic conditions under which groups like ISIS and al-Qaeda thrive. Generally speaking, everyday Westerners are happy to remain in the dark about such things but when civilians start getting shot at concert halls and pizza joints in Paris, people start asking questions. And Putin has been happy to provide answers.

Assad: “I never thought about leaving Syria under any circumstances”

Thank you very much, Mr. President, for your hospitality and for giving the Spanish News Agency EFE the opportunity to understand what is the situation in your country. Okay, on November 14th, the world powers, including Russia and Iran, agreed in Vienna on a timetable for a political solution for the Syria crisis. According to this timetable, the negotiations between your government and the moderate opposition should start on Jan. 1. Are you ready to start those negotiations?

At the same time, Assad once again reiterated that his government is always open for negotiations with the real opposition – but emphasized that opposition must be defined.

“Opposition, for everyone in this world, doesn’t mean militant,” Assad stressed. He said that Damascus is already engaged in dialogue with certain armed “groups, not organizations”, so they would lay down their arms in exchange for “amnesty from the government” and a chance to return to “normal life.”

“This is the only way to deal with the militants in Syria. Whenever they want to change their approach, give up the armaments, we are ready, while to deal with them as a political entity, this is something we completely refuse,” Assad clarifies.

KERRY AND CAMERON PUSH “MODERATE” FALLACY TO DEFEAT ASSAD IN SYRIA

Left out of the discussion is the fact there are no “moderate” and “non-terrorist opposition forces” fighting in Syria. This fact has been repeatedly documented by the media, including The New York Times.

After Russia entered the fray in defense of the Syrian government, this fact was swept aside.

The United States claims Russia is targeting “moderates” and not the Islamic State. In fact, Russia has targeted groups aligned with the Islamic State, such as al-Nusra, and others fighting to overthrow the government.

Why Syria’s Assad Will Likely Outlast Barack Obama in Office

But with the increasingly dire threat of the self-proclaimed Islamic State terrorist group – highlighted by downing of the Russian A321 jet on Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula and the Paris terror attacks – the West is beginning to show more flexibility on the fate of the Syrian leader.

During the 17-nation gathering in Vienna last weekend, a peace plan was drafted which states that “free and fair elections would be held pursuant to the new constitution within 18 months.” Speaking on this plan, the US State Department said that new Syrian elections could establish a new parliament, but that the vote would in no way guarantee Assad’s ousting, according to the Associated Press.
