FBI, Homeland Security chiefs preparing for violence at political conventions

U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson and FBI Director James Comey told lawmakers on Thursday that they were preparing their agencies for the possibility of violence, both from unruly demonstrators and terrorists, at the upcoming Republican and Democratic nominating conventions.

Speaking before the House Homeland Security Committee, Johnson said he was concerned that demonstrations at the events could get out of hand.

In an interview with Reuters following his testimony, Johnson said he knew of no specific or credible threat to either convention but that it was important to be prepared.

Johnson said the Department of Homeland Security would be sending more than 3,000 personnel to each convention.

Recent clashes between attendees and protesters at rallies for presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump have led to physical assaults and arrests.

The Republican National Convention being held July 18-21 in Cleveland and the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia from July 25-28 follow a string of high-profile shootings.

In June, an Islamic State sympathizer committed the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history, killing 49 people in a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida. Last week, five police officers in Dallas were killed by a black man angry about police shootings of unarmed black men.

Comey told the committee that the Federal Bureau of Investigation was monitoring the threat of violence at the conventions “very, very carefully.”

“Anytime there is a national spotlight on a political event in the United States, there is a risk that groups that aspire to do just that, engage in acts of domestic terrorism, will be attracted,” Comey said.

GEORGE P. BUSH: A BUSH CAN SURVIVE IN TRUMP POLITICAL WORLD

George P. Bush

George P. Bush was talking about his future political plans – and how Donald Trump wouldn’t reshape them – when two women approached, giddy with excitement.

They wanted pictures with a man whose photogenic smile once landed him on People magazine’s most-eligible bachelors list. Up close, though, they saw something unexpected.

“You look like your dad,” Ruth Ann Pratt, a retired college math teacher from Lake Jackson, near Houston, finally exclaimed. “You turn slightly to the side, and you ARE your dad.”

Bush only smiled. These days, being associated with his father, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, may not be such a great thing.

Eighteen months after he was elected Texas land commissioner and a few weeks past his 40th birthday, Bush is quietly continuing his family’s legacy. The grandson of one former president and nephew of another, he remains a rising star in America’s largest conservative state and is keeping alive the possibility that a political dynasty declared dead by many when his dad flamed out of the presidential race could yet again return to national prominence.

HILLARY CLINTON, THE FIRST PROBATIONER IN THE WHITE HOUSE

021216clinton

Criminologists and government officials say if Clinton is indicted for ignoring a record retention law and mishandling classified information and she accepts a plea, she may be put on probation. The deal would need to be struck after entering the White House, however. It is unlikely Clinton would win the nomination let alone the election if she is convicted prior to the convention.

“Anyone can be on probation,” Chief U.S. Probation Officer Belinda Ashley told US News & World Report.

Despite this, the odds of a Clinton conviction or even an indictment are at best a remote possibility. As a top member of the establishment’s political class, she is virtually untouchable. David Petraeus may get a hand slap for showing classified documents to his mistress and lying about it to the FBI, but Clinton will never see the inside of a courtroom.

2016: The Year the Americans Found out Our Elections Are Rigged

The 2016 election has been a wild ride, with two insurgent grassroots campaigns literally giving the political establishment a run for its money. But as the events of this presidential primary season play out, it’s becoming clear the U.S. election — and even more so, the presidential race — is a big scam being perpetrated on the American people.

Events from the last week have exposed the system as an illusion of choice and a farce. They have reinforced at least one study showing the U.S. is an oligarchy rather than a democratic republic.

The Wyoming democratic caucus took place on Saturday, purportedly to allow voters to have their voices heard in the race between Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton. Sanders lost the Wyoming caucus by winning it with a 12 percent margin.

Wait, what?

How does one lose by winning 56 percent of the votes? This happens when the political process is, according to the New York Post, “rigged” by superdelegates. The Post summed up this “strange” phenomenon:

“[U]nder the Democratic Party’s oddball delegate system, Sanders’ winning streak — he has won seven out of the past eight contests — counts for little.

Mississippi gov. signs religious freedom bill despite LGBT pressure

State-of-the-State-2015_1_810_500_55_s_c1

Defying the trend of Republican governors in other states, the governor of Mississippi has signed a law protecting people of conscience from being compelled to participate in same-sex ceremonies.

Gov. Phil Bryant signed the “Protecting Freedom of Conscience from Government Discrimination Act” (H.B. 1523) yesterday, saying that the government may not compel religious organizations or individuals who have a sincere objection to take part in any homosexual couple’s “wedding.”

“I am signing H.B. 1523 into law to protect sincerely held religious beliefs and moral convictions of individuals, organizations, and private associations from discriminatory actions from state government or its political subdivisions,” Gov. Bryant said in a statement released this afternoon.

For instance, the state must issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. However, individual state employees may ask for a recusal, provided someone else will do so and the “licensing of any legally valid marriage is not impeded or delayed.”

Gov. Bryant’s decision comes just one week after business and entertainment companies lobbied Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal to veto a similar bill. He ultimately hinted that the legislation did not align with the New Testament.

Murray Rothbard Soars, Bill Buckley Evaporates

rothbard2

Fifty years ago this year, Murray N. Rothbard offered his thoughts onNational Review, the flagship magazine of American conservatism, which had commemorated its tenth anniversary in late 1965.

He went on to tell the full story in The Betrayal of the American Right, at once an intellectual history and a memoir.

Murray’s primary complaint: what had once been a movement skeptical of or opposed to overseas adventurism and empire-building had now, under the influence of editor Bill Buckley, come to be defined by those very things.

In Buckley’s infamous formulation, it would be necessary to erect a “totalitarian bureaucracy” within our shores in order to battle communism abroad. The implication was that once the communist menace subsided, this extraordinary effort, domestic and foreign, could likewise diminish.

Since government programs do not have a habit of diminishing but instead seek new justifications when the old ones no longer exist, few of us were surprised when the warfare state, and its right-wing apologists, hummed right along after its initial rationale vanished from history.

As it turns out, by the way, the Soviet threat was grossly exaggerated, as such threats always are. The wickedness of the Soviet regime was never in doubt, but its capabilities and intentions were consistently distorted and overblown.

The ‘Fascist’ left in America

12132015_b3moorelgfacism8201_c0-216-1600-1148_s885x516

It’s hard to find a self-respecting liberal these days who doesn’t denounce Donald Trump as “a fascist.” if you Google “fascist” the first thing that pops on the screen is a photo of Mr. Trump.

Those in the media or the university professors or Democratic pundits who don’t call him a fascist resort to over-the-top sneering terms like “racist,” “repellent,” and even “Nazi.” After Mr. Trump’s call for a moratorium on Muslim immigration, here were a few of the choice words for those tolerant people on the left:

“He is running for president as a fascist demagogue.” – Martin O’Malley, Democratic presidential candidate.

Trump literally wants to write racism into our law books” — Huma Abedin, aide to Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton.

“It is … entirely fair to call him a mendacious racist.” – Ben Smith, editor-in-chief, Buzzfeed.

“America’s modern Mussolini.” -Dana Milbank, The Washington Post.

Trump is a proto-fascist, rather than an actual fascist. He has many ideas that are fascistic in nature . CNN.

At the end of this sneering commentary, CNN launched into a fascinating tutorial on what a Fascist is. Here are several key characteristics of a fascist leader according to CNN:

• “The superiority of the leader’s instincts over abstract and universal reason.”

• “The belief of one group that it is the victim, justifying any action.”

• “The need for authority by natural leaders (always male) culminating in a national chief who alone is capable of incarnating the group’s destiny.”

Wait a minute. What modern politician best fits this description? Could it be … Barack Obama. The Messiah. The chosen one. The man who holds political rallies with gothic columns in giant amphitheaters who enters the stage as if he were a Greek god? The greatest demagogue of modern times, who convinced the vast electorate that they are “victims” and that their key to happiness and prosperity is to take from the rich — people, he says, who have way more wealth than they could possibly need.

President Obama’s whole political success rests on identity politics — of persuading blacks, Hispanics, Jews, women, the disabled, gays, students, the poor, immigrants, that they are victims of a vast American government conspiracy against them.

Plan B: Clumsy Attempt to Justify Washington’s Political Fiasco in Syria

1034823754

US Secretary of State John Kerry‘s Plan B has provoked a heated debate among international experts, observers and politicians.

It was reported that the plan envisages “an increase in US Special Forces on the ground, an increase in arms assistance to fighters opposing Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, and a no-fly zone,” US author and investigative journalist Gareth Porter writes in his article for Middle East Eye.

However, given the present situation in Syria the fuss surrounding the notorious Plan B is much ado about nothing: none of the options are even close to being realistic, the journalist underscores.
