Davos is the problem, not the solution

 

The World Economic Forum says it is ’ committed to improving the state of the world’. But in fact the world was in a far better state before the WEF (originally called the European Management Forum), was established in 1971.

For the majority of people of the planet, but not for the super, super rich, things have gone backwards since the first Davos meeting was held. That’s no coincidence as Davos – for all the ’progressive’ waffle about ‘stakeholder theory’ and the ’global public interest’ – is all about maintaining an elite-friendly, neoliberal economic order which has caused so much economic, social, cultural and environmental damage.

Holding court at Davos this year, as in other years, was the octogenarian hedge fund billionaire George Soros, the 16th richest man in the world according to Forbes, with a net worth of $24.5bn.

UK’s Cameron covertly helping House of Saud’s military offensive in Yemen

Britain’s veneer is cracking. If ever anyone was left to believe that London still stands for all things fair and democratic, PM David Cameron’s love affair with al-Saud should have long dissolved any such naivety.

An oligarchy in civil clothing, Britain’s inner political nature came out to play. Powered by Saudi billions, the UK has become a war enabler, a mercenary army and somewhat of a military proxy sold to the will of al-Saud absolute monarchy.

A self-proclaimed advocate for civil liberties and human rights, PM Cameron has had no qualms in backing, propping and powering Saudi Arabia’s illegal war in Yemen, on account London and Riyadh have entertained a long-standing friendship, sealed in multi-billions military contracts.

No country for Black men: And the Oscar goes to… Whites only

Last year’s Oscars ceremony in Hollywood was engulfed in controversy over the lack of major nominations for black and minority artists. The controversy this year is even greater with a movement to boycott what are being called the ‘lily white Oscars’.

 

Does Hollywood have a problem with race? Are black and minority actors and artists in the movie industry regarded as second-class citizens, denied a seat at the table of mainstream acceptance even in 2016? This is the inference behind the #OscarsSoWhite Twitter campaign attacking this year’s Oscars ceremony in Hollywood, which sees all twenty acting nominations being contested by white performers.

CNN OP-ED CALLS FOR OBAMA TO DECLARE “NATIONAL STATE OF EMERGENCY” TO GUT 2ND AMENDMENT

Elliot Fineman, of the National Gun Victims Action Council, wants the president to follow through on his recent gun control efforts by “monitoring ammunition sales and banning those on the terror watch list from buying guns.”

This could be achieved without congressional approval by Obama enacting a “National State of Emergency (that) scares the gun lobby and pro-gun lawmakers,” writes Fineman.

OPEC magazine op-ed that fueled oil rally baffles insiders

An OPEC publication written by the exporter group’s public relations team helped oil prices jump and prompted speculation over a possible shift in output policy – to the bafflement of some OPEC insiders.

The commentary on Monday in the OPEC Bulletin, a magazine issued by OPEC’s Vienna headquarters, said downward pressure on prices due to higher production “remains a cause for concern” and OPEC “stands ready to talk to all other producers”.

While the 799-word article helped add another 8 percent to oil’s three-day surge, by Tuesday it seemed clear there was no sign of a significant shift in OPEC policy or any indication of a fresh push to shore up markets, analysts and OPEC insiders said.
