NATO commander says Russia and Syria are using migration as a weapon

A top United States and North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) commander said Tuesday that Russia and Syria are using migration as a tool to destabilize their European neighbors, and warned of “resurgent and aggressive” Russian behavior in the region.

US Air Force Gen. Philip Breedlove, Commander of the US European Command and Supreme Allied Commander Europe for NATO, said that the migrant crisis facing Europe is allowing terror elements into the continent undetected, with actions by the Islamic State (IS), Moscow, and Damascus pushing people out of Syria and Iraq and into the European system.

“Europe faces the dawning challenge of mass migration spurred by state instability and state collapse, a migration that masks the movement of criminals, terrorists, and foreign fighters,” Breedlove said at a Pentagon press briefing. “Within this mix, [IS] is spreading like a cancer, taking advantage of paths of least resistance, threatening European nations and our own with terrorist attacks.”

Migrant crisis: Russia and Syria ‘weaponising’ migration

_88535751_88535457

US Gen Philip Breedlove said they were “weaponising” migration to destabilise and undermine the continent.

He also suggested that criminals, extremists and fighters were hiding in the flow of migrants.

Migrants are continuing to accumulate in Greece, after Macedonia stopped allowing more than a trickle through.

On Wednesday it allowed around 200 Syrian and Iraqi refugees to cross, with thousands still stuck on the Greek side of the border.

New figures suggest last year’s total of one million seaborne migrants arriving in Europe could be matched well before the end of the year.

Scared Sweden: Almost Half Of Women ‘Afraid’ To Be Out After Dark In Europe’s Rape Capital

GettyImages-136319330-640x480

Combining a wide-ranging study of attitudes of women towards being outside in the evening on their own and personal interviews, the findings show that the statement of 34-year-old Ellinor Andersson that she carried a bunch of keys in her hand at night, ready to strike out, are quite normal.

Talking to Aftonbladet, the woman said: “I would never go running by myself on a Friday or a Saturday night”. Another said she would never go out alone after seven in the evening.

The survey finds that now 46 per cent of women aged 16 or over felt either very or somewhat unsafe when they are alone in the dark, compared to just 20 per cent for men. Even during the daytime many are uncomfortable, the results also show 43 per cent felt insecure while in a city on their own, and around a third were “afraid” of Swedish cities”.

Many women were so afraid of trying to get home in the dark, they would go to lengths to avoid it. Almost one third said they’d rather stay at a friend’s house overnight than try and get home, should they be caught out by the falling sun.

The figures may come as a surprise to some, given the reputation Sweden once enjoyed for being one of the happiest and safest countries in the world. Today, Sweden has been calledthe rape capital of the west, and despite efforts to debunk the title it still has significantlyhigher than average rates of assault.

While the Aftonbladet study makes absolutely no reference to what precisely the women are afraid of, the study comes amid a barrage of stories coming out of the country of lone women being raped and attacked by newly arrived migrants.

One major concern is that many of these men remain free after offending, having been handed extremely short sentences or not having been caught at all. A news story that may weigh heavily on the minds of Swedish women, and was reported by their national media before the police stopped revealing the identity of offenders in crimes where migrants were involved to avoid seeming “racist”, is that of a brutal gang rape in a secluded park that left a woman with “life changing” injuries.

MERKEL DOUBLES DOWN: ‘I HAVE NO PLAN B’ ON MIGRANT CRISIS

merkel-arabs

I have no plan B,” she added.

According to Focus, Mrs Merkel said she was convinced she was doing the right thing, despite well over a million people entering Germany last year thanks to her migration policies. She said she was trying to redistribute as many of them as possible to other European countries – through the compulsory migrant quotas system – and claimed to be addressing the problems causing them to enter Europe in the first place.

Crunch moment for EU migrant crisis

Migrants try to break through a border f...Migrants try to break through a border fence into Macedonia near the Greek village of Idomeni, on February 29 , 2016, where more than 7,000 people are stranded, as anger mounted over travel restrictions on migrants. Macedonian police fired tear gas as a group of some 300 Iraqi and Syrians forced their way through a Greek police cordon and raced towards a railway track between the two countries. The protest occurred several hours after Macedonia allowed just 300 Syrians and Iraqis to cross before resealing the frontier. With Austria and Balkan states capping the numbers of migrants entering their soil, there has been a swift buildup along the Greece-Macedonia border with Athens warning that the number of people "trapped" could reach up to 70,000 by next month. / AFP / LOUISA GOULIAMAKILOUISA GOULIAMAKI/AFP/Getty Images

Europe’s migration crisis is hurtling towards a potentially defining turning point this month, with the pillars of the EU’s policy under sustained assault and German chancellor Angela Merkel facing the first electoral test of her refugee policy.

EU leaders are preparing for an emergency migration summit on Monday against the backdrop of desperate scenes at the Greece-Macedonia border, where crowds of migrants were beaten back from storming a fence with a salvo of tear gas. influx this spring and summer.

Ms Merkel is beset on all sides domestically and isolated abroad. The arrival of 1.1m refugees into Germany has eroded her once soaring popularity and that of her governing CDU/CSU bloc.

The CDU is bracing itself for a poor showing in three state elections scheduled for March 13 that have turned into a referendum on the chancellor’s refugee strategy. The upstart Alternative für Deutschland, a rightwing populist party which wants to close the border, is polling strongly: and critics within Ms Merkel’s own party are demanding a change of course.

Some diplomats in Brussels suggest that such a change is already under way. There remains a dissonance in messages from Berlin. Diplomats noted the “radically” different tone of German interior minister Thomas de Maizière at the meeting of home affairs ministers in Brussels last week. But in public, Berlin is sticking to Ms Merkel’s policy, based primarily on an EU deal with Turkey to crack down on people smuggling across the Aegean, insisting there is “no plan B”.

Two crucial meetings in a fortnight — the EU-Turkey talks on March 7 and an EU migration summit on March 18 and 19 — will dictate whether it succeeds.

Migrant crisis: Greece recalls ambassador from Austria amid EU rifts

Migrants cross the Greek-Macedonian border near the town of Gevgelija on 25 February 2016

It acted after Austria hosted a meeting with Balkan states on the migrant issue, to which Greece was not invited.

Meanwhile, EU and Balkan interior ministers met in Brussels to try to heal rifts over the migrant issue.

Speaking afterwards, the EU’s migration commissioner warned the bloc’s migration system could “completely break down” within weeks.

Dimitris Avramopoulos said member states had until a 7 March summit with Turkey to curb the number of migrants.

“In the next 10 days, we need tangible and clear results on the ground,” he told reporters.

Austria, Serbia and Macedonia have taken their own steps to limit entry to migrants, angering Greece, which fears the controls will cause a bottleneck. The measures also threaten Europe’s Schengen passport-free travel area that spans 26 countries.

Watch Greek Soccer Players Sit In Silence To Honor Migrants And Refugees

Can-b4_WwAA-Lyk

At a soccer match in Larissa, Greece, on Friday, players on opposing teams showed true sportsmanship to stage a protest in solidarity with the migrants and refugees who died trying to reach their country.

After the referee blew the opening whistle, instead of starting the game, all 22 players on the pitch — as well as substitute players and coaches on the sidelines — from Greece’s second-division football clubs AEL Larissa and Acharnaikos, sat down in silence. Footage of the moment can be seen in the video above from Greece’s OTE Sports channel, which was distributed by the Guardian.

EXPOSED: Pro Migrant Campaigners FAKED Migrant Death For Propaganda

Screen-Shot-2016-01-28-at-13.04.40-640x480

A pro-migrant activist first reported the story on Facebook, including a transcript with the lying man, called ‘Dirk’. She described the refuges deteriorating condition in startling detail, as well as alleging that four migrant women had had miscarried in the queue, and that a migrant child had been abducted.

“A 24-year-old Syrian who has been queuing for days on LaGeSo in freezing temperatures in the slush, by fever, chills, then cardiac arrest in the ambulance, then in the emergency room, has passed away”, wrote Reyna Bruns yesterday.

Adding: “This sacrifice of a human life ought to have been prevented. We all saw it coming. And not just for the past two days. For the past half a year.”

LaGeSo is the Berlin Health and Social Affairs Office, where all Berlin refugees must register. It had become a flash point in Germany’s refugee crisis, struggling to cope with the volume of arrivals and facing heavy criticism for delays.

Austria suspends Schengen agreement, steps up border control, tells EU to sort out migrant crisis

Over 3,000 migrants that arrived under false identities have already been sent back since the beginning of the year, border officials reported.

“It’s big business and what hasn’t yet been ascertained is who is running this show. A lot of [fake documents] are quite well produced, which means certain groups are actually making a lot of money and causing a lot of problems,” Mallinson said, adding that “it’s very difficult to distinguish between genuine refugees and those – and there are many of them – who are jumping on the bandwagon and coming in [to Europe].”
