‘THIS IS ORWELLIAN’: POLITICIAN REACTS TO HEARING HIS HACKED PHONE CONVERSATION

Independent South Australian Senator Nick Xenophon, who was skeptical of the claims surrounding poor cell phone security, agreed to become the target of a team of German hackers.

“I don’t believe they can pull it off, but if you reckon they can pull it off, I give my consent,” the senator said.

After making multiple phone calls to 60 Minutes reporter Ross Coulthart while in several different countries, Xenophon traveled to Germany to meet with the hacking team and discovered that his GPS coordinates, texts and even phone calls had been hacked in real-time.

“This is actually quite shocking…” Xenophon said after seeing the data. “It means anyone with a mobile phone can be hacked, can be bugged, can be harassed… This is Orwellian.”

The reporter proceeded to show Xenophon where he was during each phone call on a digital map, accurately pinpointing locations in Japan and Australia.

“If you’re involved in sensitive commercial negotiations where the other company can do you over by virtue of hacking this with sensitive information, if you have an ex-partner that’s being vindictive that can try and embarrass you and humiliate you, no one is safe,” the senator added.

Such hacking techniques can be carried out locally with an IMSI-catcher, a portable device that tricks cell phones into giving up digital information by mimicking a cell tower, or globally by exploiting the Signaling System Number 7 (SS7) protocol.

As explained by ESD America, a cellular security company that has long warned of such vulnerabilities, “SS7 creates an international roaming infrastructure, that by its nature, transmits confidential customer data between networks and countries to support the seamless roaming services subscribers expect.”

Telecommunications companies and governments alike have thus far ignored the massive security flaw, likely due to its frequent exploitation by national security agencies.

Microsoft confirms Finnish phone site closure and job cuts

A Microsoft logo is seen on an office building in New York Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) on Friday confirmed it will close Nokia Oyj’s (NOKIA.HE) former handset product development unit in Salo, Finland, and will cut a total of up to 2,300 jobs in the Nordic country.

The cuts, initially announced in July, are part of Microsoft’s plan to cut 7,800 jobs globally, most from the phone hardware business that it bought from Nokia last year.

Two Finnish sites, in Espoo and Tampere, will remain open, Microsoft said.

Russian Developers Claim They Have an NSA-Proof, Secure Encrypted Phone

Scientists at Russia’s National Research Nuclear University MEPhI in Moscow have developed this country’s first handset for smartphones which protects users against concealed tapping. The new solution was presented earlier this summer at Mobile World Congress, one of the world’s largest mobile products shows in Shanghai, China, the Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported.

RUSSIAN DEVELOPERS CLAIM THEY HAVE AN NSA-PROOF, SECURE ENCRYPTED PHONE

The researchers at MEPhI’s Engineering Center are said to have come up with a wireless handset that not only wards off covert tapping but also enables secure text communication through a mobile app.
“In our technology, a closed communications channel is created between two handsets, using end-to-end techniques and other mechanisms to make sure hardware-level data protection systems are compatible. Thus the solution addresses the typical vulnerabilities of mobile devices and data transmission networks, and guards against attacks on telecom servers,” the project owners claim.

NSA Doesn’t Want Court That Found Phone Dragnet Illegal to Actually Do Anything About It

he National Security Agency doesn’t think it’s relevant that its dragnet of American telephone data—information on who’s calling who, when, and for how long— was ruled illegal back in May.

An American Civil Liberties Union lawsuit is asking the Second Circuit Court of Appeals, which reached that conclusion, to immediately enjoin the program.

But the U.S. government responded on Monday evening, saying that Congressional passage of the USA Freedom Act trumped the earlier ruling. The Freedom Act ordered an end to the program — but with a six-month wind-down period.

But the U.S. government responded on Monday evening, saying that Congressional passage of the USA Freedom Act trumped the earlier ruling. The Freedom Act ordered an end to the program — but with a six-month wind-down period.

“Contrary to plaintiffs’ insistence, Congress in that legislation did not contemplate an abrupt and immediate end to the Section 215 bulk telephony-metadata program,” the Justice Department argued in its latest brief. “Quite the opposite… That transition period reflects Congress’s and the President’s combined judgment that there should be an orderly transition from the existing program to the new one, during which the government should retain needed tools to protect against the continuing terrorist threat.”
