Study: Frequent Social Media Use May Take Toll On Teens’ Mental Health

Internet Market Considers MIcrosoft Bid for Yahoo

Frequent social media use could have a negative impact on young people’s mental health, according to a new study.

For many teens, going even an hour without checking Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter is a struggle. Twenty-four percent of teenagers go online “almost constantly,” according to a recent Pew Research Center study.

But more alarming than the time spent are the negative consequences that young people may suffer from due to too much screen-time.

The study, from Ottawa Public Health, suggests that teens who use social media sites for two hours or more daily are at risk for poor mental health, psychological distress and suicidal thoughts, as reported by Huffington Post.

Do Families in Red or Blue States Have Greater Stability? What a Study Found.

Contrary to what had been accepted as conventional wisdom, America’s red counties have a higher percentage of stable families than those in blue counties.

According to a study from the Institute for Family Studies, red counties tend to have more married adults, more children born within marriage and higher levels of children living with both biological parents than blue counties.

“The reddest counties have higher rates of family stability, which is surprising because red counties, especially in the South, tend to have higher divorce rates,” said W. Bradford Wilcox, senior fellow with the Institute for Family Studies and author of the study. “But what seems to be happening here is that non-marital childbearing has emerged as a bigger engine of family instability than divorce in America. And this brief indicates that non-marital childbearing is lower in redder counties.”

STUDY FINDS TRACES OF COCAINE, OTHER ILLEGAL DRUGS IN ONTARIO DRINKING WATER

Researchers at McGill University found water discharged from waste-water treatment plants in the Grand River watershed has the potential to contaminate sources of drinking water with drugs such as morphine, cocaine and oxycodone.

The study – published in the journal Environmental Toxicology & Chemistry – says the drugs are found only in relatively limited quantities in the river water.

However, it notes their concentration did not decline with distance downstream from the waste-water treatment plant and says many of the drugs were not removed completely during drinking-water treatment.
