Reunion police and army halt MH370 debris search

The police and army on the Indian Ocean island of Reunion have called off their search for more debris from the wreckage of Malaysian Airlines flight MH370, which vanished last year, police said on Monday.

A piece of wing was found on the shore of the French-governed island last month and Malaysian authorities have said paint color and maintenance-record matches proved it came from the missing Boeing (BA.N) 777 aircraft.

Ten days of searching involving an army plane, two helicopters and a police speedboat have not found any more wreckage. Washed-up objects including water bottles have been passed on to investigators in case they can be linked to the plane, police said.

“The statistical chances of discovering debris from the MH370 during coordinated searches appear to be extremely small,” Reunion police said, adding that they would continue to be vigilant.

Libertarians challenge New York’s pistol permit law


When Edward Garrett moved here from South Dakota, he went about getting a pistol permit.

Three years later, he’s suing New York State in Buffalo federal court.

“Whatever happened to the words, ‘shall not be infringed?’ ” asked Garrett, a Town of Evans resident and the new chairman of the Erie County Libertarian Party.

Garrett is one of eight plaintiffs in a new civil suit challenging the constitutionality of New York’s pistol permit law, a gun control law dating to 1911 and the Tammany Hall days of New York City.

Lisa Rinna was the victim of a terrifying hoax on Tuesday, after scammers called the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star claiming to have kidnapped her daughter.

Rinna detailed the nerve-wracking experience on Twitter.

“We had the most terrifying phone call happen today. People should be aware of these scam terrorists calling saying they have your child,” the 52-year-old actress and reality star wrote in a series of tweets. “They put a child crying on the phone saying mom help me please and then they try and extort money and say they will kill your child. It is the worst scariest nightmare and it must stop now.”

TTIP CONTROVERSY: SECRET TRADE DEAL CAN ONLY BE READ IN SECURE ‘READING ROOM’ IN BRUSSELS

An investigation by German news site Correct!v has revealed that the Commission is cracking down on TTIP security following a series of leaks, purportedly by EU member states who had accessed information on the deal electronically.

EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmström has said that no more reports on TTIP negotiations will be sent to Member States because of “important vulnerabilities in the last rounds of negotiations”.

Officials were told of this change in policy on July 24th at a meeting in Brussels in which the Commission explained that the documents had “been submitted to databases of [member states’] national parliaments” meaning that “hundreds of people have actually uncontrolled access”.
